Prizings .

Prizings are the examinations that students must pass in order to progress through the ranks. The name “Prizing” derives from the purse or increase in rank that a fighter won on successfully completing these challenges. Hence the terms “Carrying off the prize.” and “Prize fighter.” Traditionally, prizors would post a bill of challenge inviting all comers to test their mettle and skill in a public display of arms.

Our instructors will guide and prepare you and will only put students forward for prizings when we are completely confident that you are ready. The rest is up to you.

Ranks.

There are four ranks in English Martial Arts, each one is a milestone in a students English Martial Arts career and a badge of both achievement and honour to be carried with pride.

Regardless of the rank a student holds, humility, courtesy and respect are the principle traits we expect from everyone.

Scholler

Scholler is the introductory rank in English Martial Arts. As the name implies, this rank is all about learning the basics.

Free Scholler

Free Scholler is the next rank up. To achieve this rank requires the student to be able to demonstrate a reasonable level of proficiency with at least two weapons and demonstrate a good level of understanding of the underlying principles of the art.

Provost

Provost is the first teaching rank deriving from the Old English, “Profost” meaning head of a chapter.
Provosts are permitted to teach students under the supevision of a Maister and will generally have studied the art for at least 7 years. To achieve the rank of Provost, students will have shown a high level of skill in at least 3 weapons and demonstrated an understanding of the principles of the art to a high level.

Maister

Maister is the highest rank achievable in English Martial Arts.
People achieving this rank are permitted to open martial arts schools and teach students under their own auspices and will have been studying the art for at least 12 years.

To achieve the rank of Maister, students must demonstrate a very high level of competence in no less than 4 weapons, demonstrate an understanding and ability to apply the principles of the art to an exceptionally high standard and show a high level of proficiency in unarmed techniques.
The term Anciant Maister is an honourific given to senior maisters.
