Frequently Asked Questions
Do you teach children?
Under 18s are more than welcome. We have undertaken safeguarding training for the protection of children and adults at risk and have enhanced DBS checks in place for instructors. Due to the nature of English Martial Arts however, we do recommend that people attending are at least 14 years old.
Will I need a lot of expensive kit.
No you won’t. Obviously, we recommend that students invest in their own equipment but we don’t demand that a lot of money is spent straight away. Safety equipment and other gear is available for students to use until they aquire gear of their own. A list of equipment that we suggest students should have is below.
I’m not young or fit. Can I train?
Of course! Everyone is welcome to EMA. We train individuals and you’ll only ever be asked that you do the best that you can to your own ability. We’ll give you every help and encouragement to be the best you can be.
Can I come along and watch to see if it’s for me?
You’re most welcome to come and watch us train but you will want to join in. There’s no charge for the first lesson, so give it a go.
Is this just a re-enactment club?
Absolutely not. This is a living martial art with real life self defence and fighting applications that are second to none. The roots of the art are ancient but the principles that underly the art are timeless.
Do I have to spar?
Not if you don’t want to. Although be aware that sparring is strictly supervised and is a really good way to build up your nerve and test out your skills and we encourage everyone to have a go.
What’s the atmosphere like?
We run a friendly and welcoming club where respect and courtesy are absolute prerequisites. We have a laugh but take our training very seriously. Everybody at EMA is joined together by a love of our art and we will not tolerate any sort of bullying or cliques.
